Emily is excited to make her company and role debut at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2018 as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia in a new production directed by Francesca Zambello.
"Rossini’s comic bel canto masterpiece The Barber of Seville will be presented in a production directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by Glimmerglass Festival Music Director Joseph Colaneri. With its famed overture that inspired the appropriately named cartoon “Rabbit of Seville” from Looney Tunes, the opera tells the story of Count Almaviva, a young nobleman who allies with Figaro, the titular barber, in order to woo Rosina. She is the mysterious ward of the elderly and foolish Dr. Bartolo who plans to marry her himself. Laughs and hilarity ensue as Figaro and the Count scheme against their adversaries.
“It’s fast. It’s furious. It’s funny,” said director Zambello. “It’s really a joyous piece. Our production will take its inspiration from 18th-century theaters and commedia dell-arte, with nods to the work of 20th-century Italian directors Luchino Visconti and Giorgio Strehler.”
“The Barber of Seville is one of the finest creations by Rossini,” Colaneri said. “The music’s memorable tunes and Spanish-influenced rhythms make it one of the classics of the opera stage; a must-see for all those wanting to experience the freshness and liveliness of one of the great works of the opera repertoire.”
The Barber of Seville will be sung in Italian and will run July 14 through August 25."
The season will also include productions of WEST SIDE STORY, THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN, ODYSSEY, and SILENT NIGHT, as well as appearances from Thomas Hampson, Rosanne Cash, and Margaret Atwood.
"I believe the Festival is a catalyst for great conversation,” Zambello said. “In 2017 we made a commitment to explore the themes of home and homeland and this will continue with the 2018 productions that all spark discussion on relevant topics.”
